Google AI Mode Ads: A Guide for Multi-Location Lead Generation

Google AI Mode ads run through your existing campaigns. Multi-location brands win there with clear service pages, qualified-lead data and controlled AI Max tests.

The short answer

Google AI Mode ads are ads that appear inside Google's conversational AI Mode search. There is zero separate AI Mode campaign to build. Eligible Search campaigns using broad match or AI Max, plus Performance Max and Shopping campaigns, can serve there. For multi-location lead generation brands, readiness comes down to three things: service and location pages that answer real questions, conversion data built on qualified leads, and controlled experiments.

The conversation starts earlier now. Be the clearest answer in it.

Start with how patients and parents search now

AI Mode lets people describe a whole situation and refine it with follow-up questions. Search Engine Land reports that Google said AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly users in May, and that Google found AI Mode questions run nearly three times longer than traditional searches.

For a dental group, a childcare network or a chain of pain clinics, a longer question carries more buying detail. For example, a parent might ask for a preschool near the office with early drop-off and a spot open this fall, then follow up about tuition and ages served. A conversational search like that often includes:

  • Location and travel distance
  • Timing, such as evening hours, weekend appointments or a start date
  • Payment details, such as insurance accepted or financing
  • Who the service is for, such as a child, a senior or a first-time patient
  • Urgency, such as pain today or an opening this week

Every one of those details is something your landing pages and ads can answer in advance.

AI Mode, AI Max and AI Overviews are three different things

The names overlap, so it pays to separate them before planning a test.

TermWhat it isWhat you control
AI ModeThe conversational search experience people useEligibility, through your existing campaigns
AI Max for SearchAn optimization layer inside a Search campaign: search term matching, text customization and Final URL expansionEach setting, plus brand, location and URL controls
AI OverviewsAI summaries at the top of standard results, with ads above, below or within themEligibility only; Google reports these ads as Top Ads

Turning on AI Max changes how a Search campaign matches queries and builds ads. That makes any lift after you enable it a mix of new matching, new creative and new destinations, rather than proof of AI Mode performance on its own.

Which campaigns can show in AI Mode

Search Engine Land summarizes the current picture this way:

  • Google's original announcement named Performance Max, Shopping and Search campaigns using broad match, including AI Max for Search, as eligible for AI Mode ad tests.
  • In September, Google ran a small experiment that let exact and phrase match Search campaigns serve text ads in AI Mode when a user shows clear, direct intent. Treat it as a limited test for now.
  • Google is testing several formats: existing text and Shopping ads within responses, Conversational Discovery ads, and Highlighted Answers that place sponsored businesses within recommendation lists. Direct Offers, a retail promotion format, is in a pilot.

One more detail matters for healthcare advertisers. Google's AI Overviews help page says ads within AI Overviews currently skip sensitive verticals, and healthcare is on that list. That page covers AI Overviews only, so confirm what your own account and category can access in AI Mode before you plan budget around it.

7 steps to get a multi-location account ready for Google AI Mode ads

1. Make qualified leads the conversion that counts

AI-led matching learns from whatever you mark as a conversion. If every form fill counts the same, the system finds more form fills, including weak ones. Set booked appointments, qualified calls or enrolled families as primary conversions, and send them back from your CRM with offline conversion import.

2. Write service pages that answer the real questions

Google says text customization builds assets from your domain, landing pages, existing ads and keywords. A page that says little beyond "quality care" gives the system little to work with. Spell out the services, who they are for, hours, insurance or payment options, and the next step.

3. Give every location a clear, accurate page

Final URL expansion can pick a different page on your site when Google expects it to perform better. Each location page works best with its own address, hours, services and booking path. Keep each page's service area accurate, since a stray city reference can suggest coverage you leave unserved.

4. Set AI Max controls on purpose

AI Max includes brand controls, locations of interest, and URL inclusion and exclusion rules. Exclude pages that make poor landing pages for new patients or families, such as careers, billing, patient portals and expired offers. If a message has to appear in every ad, such as a required disclaimer, review Google's AI Max FAQ first. Search Engine Land notes the FAQ says pinning is ignored with certain asset optimization and URL inclusion settings.

5. Preview AI-written copy before you opt in

Google Ads now shows up to 10 sample headlines and descriptions generated from your landing page, in the Asset optimization section, before you turn on text customization. Use the preview to catch claims your compliance team would reject. The samples are examples, so keep reviewing live assets after launch.

6. Test with an experiment, region by region

Run AI Max as an experiment against your current Search campaign. Search Engine Journal reports that AI Max experiments can now keep brand and location controls in place, so the test matches how the campaign will run for real. For a multi-location group, start with one region and a clear budget.

7. Read the reporting for what it shows

AI Max reporting shows expanded and keywordless matches, generated headlines and selected landing pages. That explains how the campaign works. Google's help page says ads in AI Overviews report as Top Ads with zero segmented view, so judge AI search exposure on outcomes: cost per qualified lead, booked visits and new patients by location.

A 60-day AI Mode readiness plan

  1. 01Weeks 1 to 2: Audit conversion actions and make qualified leads or booked appointments the primary goal.
  2. 02Weeks 1 to 2: Inventory service and location pages, and fill gaps in hours, services, insurance and booking steps.
  3. 03Weeks 3 to 4: Preview text customization, then set brand, location and URL rules.
  4. 04Weeks 3 to 4: Launch an AI Max experiment in one region against the current campaign.
  5. 05Weeks 5 to 8: Review new search terms, landing pages and generated headlines weekly, and add recurring questions to your pages.
  6. 06Week 8: Decide region by region on cost per qualified lead and booked visits, then scale what wins.

How SalesX prepares multi-location accounts for AI search

AI search rewards the same two things SalesX has always focused on: precise pre-click targeting and post-click pages that turn interest into a booked visit.

A multi-location dental group (DSO) we partner with under NDA saw 40–50% more leads at the same ad spend within 60 days, and 80% of those leads became new patient visits. SalesX credits two levers for that result: expert pre-click targeting and post-click landing page experiences. SalesX's X-Vault technologies give each client a custom, continuously improved edge, tuned to that client's growth goals.

The bottom line

AI Mode moves the first conversation earlier, while people are still describing what they need. Brands with clear pages, qualified-lead data and disciplined tests show up as the obvious answer. Prepare the account now, test what your market offers, and measure by booked visits.
