Call Tracking for Multi-Location Businesses: Know Which Location Got the Lead
Give every location its own tracked number, count real conversations, and send booked calls back to Google Ads so bidding funds the locations that book.

The short answer
Call tracking for multi-location businesses means every location gets its own tracked phone number, so each call ties back to the campaign, keyword and location that earned it. Google Ads supports this with Google forwarding numbers for calls from ads and calls from your website, plus call imports from a CRM or call tracking tool. Feed the qualified calls back into Google Ads, and bidding learns which locations and searches actually book.
Count every call by location, and the budget follows the bookings.
Start with where the leads actually arrive
For dental groups, childcare centers, pain clinics and home service brands, the phone is a primary lead channel. A parent calls to ask about a tour. A patient calls to check insurance. An account that counts only form fills sees part of the demand and bids on part of the picture.
Search Engine Land's October 2026 review of conversion tracking mistakes names phone calls as the most commonly missed conversion in the accounts its author audits. For a multi-location brand, the gap widens fast, because every untracked call is also a lead with zero location attached.
The economics are simple. A booked visit at one location may be worth far more than a form fill at another. When calls carry their location, you can fund the offices and centers that turn calls into revenue.
The 5 ways Google Ads tracks calls
Google's help center lists five call conversion types. Each one fits a different part of the lead path.
| Call conversion type | What it counts | Best fit |
| Calls from ads | Calls from call-only ads, call assets and location assets that last at least your minimum call length | Mobile searchers who tap to call from the ad |
| Calls to a number on your website | Calls to the Google forwarding number shown on your site after an ad click, above your minimum length | Visitors who read the location page, then call |
| Clicks on a number on your mobile site | Taps on a phone link on your mobile site | A simple signal when number swapping is unavailable |
| Clicks on call ads and assets | Clicks Google estimates led to a meaningful call, without a forwarding number | Accounts that skip call reporting |
| Import call conversions | Calls you mark in a CRM or call tracking tool, with values | Counting only qualified or booked calls |
Google notes that calls from ads, calls from your website and imported calls all rely on Google forwarding numbers, and that the minimum call length filters out short calls. You can check actual call durations in the Call details report.
7 steps to call tracking that works location by location
1. Give every location its own tracked number
One shared number for the whole brand blends every office into one line. Assign each location a dedicated tracking number in your call tracking tool, and use it consistently on that location's ads, landing page and lead routing. A dedicated number keeps a paid lead, an organic Maps call and a repeat customer easy to tell apart.
2. Set call assets at the right level
Google applies the most specific call asset available: ad group assets override campaign assets, and campaign assets override account assets. In a campaign-per-location structure, a campaign-level call asset per location keeps each number in its lane. You can also schedule call assets so numbers appear only during the hours a location can answer.
3. Pair call assets with location assets thoughtfully
Google says that when an ad shows both location and call assets, ads featuring a specific location may send calls to the number tied to that location instead of the call asset number. Check that each Business Profile location number matches the tracking plan, so calls still land with the right label. Our guide to Google Ads location assets for multi-location brands covers the setup.
4. Swap numbers on each location page
For website calls, Google's phone snippet replaces your listed number with a Google forwarding number for visitors who came from an ad. Google notes that the default JavaScript tag tracks one number per page, so a page that lists several locations needs the manual install. If your site uses dynamic number insertion or third-party call tracking, Google recommends verifying domain ownership, for example by linking Search Console, so call assets pass review.
5. Set a minimum call length that matches a real conversation
A wrong-number call and a booked appointment look the same if every call counts. Pick a minimum length that reflects a real inquiry for your business, then review the Call details report to confirm the threshold fits. Lead generation accounts usually count each call once per click, which keeps repeat dials from inflating results.
6. Import the calls that booked
The strongest signal is the outcome. Google's help center explains that importing call conversions from a CRM gives you control over which calls count, for example only calls that include a sale, along with their values. Our offline conversion import guide shows how to send booked visits and enrollments back into Google Ads.
7. Make the right call action primary
Bidding optimizes toward primary conversion actions. Make the qualified or booked call action primary and keep raw call counts as secondary for diagnostics. Our guide to primary vs secondary conversions in Google Ads explains how to choose.
A weekly call review rhythm
- 01Compare calls by location against each location's budget and booked visits.
- 02Spot-check the Call details report for durations near your minimum length.
- 03Confirm every location's tracking number still matches its ads, page and Business Profile.
- 04Check that imported booked calls arrived on schedule from the CRM.
- 05Shift budget toward locations where calls turn into bookings.
Watch your Local Services Ads number too
Local Services Ads campaigns are moving into Google Ads as Performance Max with pay-per-lead goals. Those campaigns route leads to a phone number you choose, so a dedicated tracking number per location keeps that history clean through the move. How SalesX approaches call tracking for multi-location accounts
Every SalesX X-Audit maps the full lead path, including calls, from the click to the booked visit, location by location. We look for shared numbers that blur locations, call assets set at the wrong level, minimum lengths that count noise, and booked calls that never return to Google Ads. Our multi-location Google Ads service builds this tracking into every location launch.
A multi-location dental group (DSO) we partner with under NDA saw 40–50% more leads at the same ad spend within 60 days, and 80% of those leads became new patient visits.

Calls are where many local customers say yes. Give every location its own number, count real conversations, and send the booked calls back to Google Ads. Bidding then learns which locations and searches grow the business.

FAQ
- What is call tracking for multi-location businesses?
- It gives each location its own tracked phone number, so every call ties back to the campaign, keyword and location that earned it. That lets you compare locations on calls and bookings, then fund the ones that perform.
- How does Google Ads track phone calls?
- Google's help center lists five methods: calls from ads, calls to a number on your website, clicks on a number on your mobile site, clicks on call ads and assets, and imported call conversions. Calls from ads, website calls and imports use Google forwarding numbers.
- What minimum call length works best?
- Pick a length that reflects a real inquiry for your business, so short calls stay out of your conversions. Review the Call details report to see actual durations and adjust the threshold.
- Can I count only calls that turn into appointments?
- Yes. Importing call conversions from a CRM or call tracking tool lets you count only calls that booked or sold, along with their values. Make that action primary so bidding optimizes toward it.
- Do call assets work for each location separately?
- Google uses the most specific call asset available, so ad group assets override campaign assets and campaign assets override account assets. A campaign per location with its own call asset keeps each number in its lane.
